(Not 500 words, but I'm so far behind, I'm choosing not to care.)
Eldin’s world had
ended- carried away in a flash of steam and a sickening freefall from the
heavens to the cold, unyielding ground below.
He could hear the wind rushing past the
metal hull of his bird- the sound no longer a comfort, but a terrifying
reminder of the fact that there was nothing up here, in the icy chill of the
atmosphere, to slow or cushion their fall. But the wind was quickly shoved to
the back of his mind as suddenly, all the feeling returned to his left side at
once. He had never felt such agony.
A wretched scream of
pain tore its way out of the boy's throat as he felt the scalding water seep
through his flight suit like it was made of thin silk, rather than tough
leather. The super-heated liquid instantly cauterized his flesh and caused the
skin on Eldin's arm, torso, and neck to redden, bubble, and blister as he was
essentially poached in the cockpit of his plane.
Somewhere, far from
the forefront of his consciousness, Eldin could hear a voice calling his name.
Or, he thought it was his name. He couldn't be sure; his mind was in a haze
from the onslaught of pain, and the boy could barely register which way was up
from where he was sitting.
He could feel his
consciousness slipping- the pain was becoming so overwhelming, his mind was
beginning to shut down in a last ditch effort to cope.
I
can't fade now… I'm the pilot, we'll go down… His mind flicked briefly to
Gaeron, and how he would go down as well if he went under. He then thought of
his parents, his classmates, how disappointed they would be when they learned
of this. He thought of his sister. He hoped she would be alright, once he was
gone.
The pain finally got
to be too much. With one last prayer for his sister's safety cast out into the
unknown, Eldin let go and faded, the pain finally ceasing as his world turned
to black.
Wow! This is the one where it really happens! It was very heartfelt and graphic but not too disturbing, which is a nice balance. Well-written!
